JULY TAIPEI

First I need to thank my family to allow me to stay away this long.
And their kindness spoils me.
I made it great for me.

Yesterday was the last day of June.
And it was a Saturday too.
I managed to see the energy and people flowing all over the city.
Canadians here celebrated the National Day with beach party and band play.
Hong Kong celebrated 10 years with grand party on TV.

Pope is making pass with China at the expense of Taiwan’s last valuable diplomatic relation.
Scottish airport blast after London bombs was in front page.
But it is not stopping local tour interests.
In fact, tourism is annual US $10.37 billion dollars business in Taiwan.
Canada has good deal of room to grow.

The President is making sharp comment on China trade.
Why he picked the Formosa Plastic as the place to speak is curious to all.
There must be something under the table for this occasion.
A threat or warning is logical.

But ironic is the news of local elementary school’s visiting China in music exchange.
One can’t help but to think.
The ruling party is pissing against the wind.

Yet, reality is.
Reliable source confirmed.
China is stopping at nothing for blocking any Taiwan’s visibility in the world.
That is not fair to the majority of people here.

But local spirit is still high.
Yesterday I first went to arrange my returning flight seat.
Then I went for my pass for Jones Cup Basketball Tournament.
This is the 30th year.
From there I walked to near by MRT station.

God, there were mass of people with hand full of shopping bags.
And at street corner, band played on with give-away.
I was the only one with sweat all over.
Everyone was stylish and cool.
Well, my old age made me indifferent to the situation.

Once I reached my destination, the movie district.
One-on one tournament had 500 teams competing at the lot.
The female stars are from China.

The landmark bookstore was packed.
But there were still rooms to read and watch.
More bands played outside.

Design show of Taiwan takes new format.
They are everywhere and everything.
Your eye reach and finger tip were full of them.
They call it “Real Life”.

Ok, I was there for that Japanese movie.
Lines were endless.
Transformers, Pirate, Ocean 13, Fantastic 4 and Shrek 3 were all sold out even mid-night ones.
That was some 50 plus shows!

My Hula Girls at 5:25 pm left with only first roll.
I decided to see it anyway
And I made a great decision!
I had eye full of tears through out the movie.
Japanese really knows how to reach our heart and soul.

Life is hard.
But human spirit can be awesome.
Face reality and deal with it head on.
That is the only choice.

Wishful thinking only cut your drive.
Yes, at 64, I still need this wake up call.
After the movie, all people tried to hide the teary eyes.
For the first time in my life, I was proud not to.

Next was the good food at 101 food court.
God, Chinese tourists were there to take pictures of anything.
And they love the tea bags in Taiwan.

By then, I was exhausted.
9 pm, night was still young.
There is this original Swing dance place
And night market is top tourist spot.
A top Asia disco place is hot.
And endless pubs and bars are near by.
But nature had the better of me.
Sleep was all I needed.
And I was alone but never felt it.
This is Taipei summer weekend magic.

CHOICE

I saw the Spiderman 3 yesterday.
I really enjoyed it.
And the “choice” theme can’t be at more proper time.

Too many people are facing choice.
And I made one yesterday.
That was joining Taiwan’s Opposition Party.

My mom’s dad died a young man for the Republic.
His name is in the shrine of country’s founding father memorial.
And both dad and mom were life time party members.
It was their regret that I was an independent rebel.

My feeling was.
It was me taking advantage to join then.
I would be privileged.
But now party is down and out.
My rebel nature makes its final choice.

The second message of the movie is to forgive.
And it says it is the hardest to forgive self.
To me, it is to let go.
Yes, it is hard.

I went to see Terracotta Army Display.
Awesome is all I can say.
But at end, it is a perfect example of can’t let go.
As first empire builder in China, to hold on is all there is at end.
And I haven’t re-visited the world famous Palace Museum yet.
To face the future, you have to let go many of past.

The biggest news is President’s daughter.
She harshly criticized her father in-law on camera.
Her husband’s longer sentence in higher court doomed her.

The truth is they all had made a choice.
And they can’t live with it.
Truly she is a victim of tragedy.
But she did accept the choice her mother made for her.
The best she can do now is to let go of past and to face whatever is coming her way.

People in Taipei are making a choice to see 2008 as a turning point.
And to let go of the unpleasant past is necessary.
To live a happy and hopeful present day is a must.
And to alert to any ruling party’s manipulation is important.

By choice, $700 billions foreign investment is expected to get into Taiwan market.
The choice of running mate by Opposition Presidential candidate is a first sign of economic seriousness.
And that is fully comprehended by business people.

Most Asian markets fall but Chinese stocks climb.
Taiwan will play a bigger role in the future.
Actually Taiwan’s businessmen are great in China.
They are bigger than what they have in Taiwan.

And China’s Party is making a choice too.
They are aiming at anti-corruption, rich to all and democratic inside the party.
In fact, it is not a choice but necessity.

Strangely it has been 10 years of HK ruling by China.
Taiwan is 20 years after “military state”.
And who can forget it is 30 years after Cultural Revolution.

Choice made all the difference.
Taiwan 70% of top 500 is in China.
Now it is time for a final political choice by voters next year.

Allen Ray,

Brad Daugherty.

DREAM TEAM TAIPEI

It is the best there is but short to the dream team.
Taiwan is at the economical cross road.
The future is up to what can be done now.

However, the political animal will not allow it.
The survival instinct will be played to the extreme.
That is the fate and misfortune of people here.

But I have to say.
This is the best of what Opposition can do at the moment.
Economic is real for the island.
It is up to the voters to see it now.

This will be a vote of moral.
There is limit of how far you can push a political issue.
Ruling party is reaching to the end of rope to me.
My generation can not be blamed on things before we were even born.
And there are questions on how real is the accusation.

The issue is clear.
And direction is economics.
Rest is to show the process and commitment.
Maybe this is a dream team after all.

TAIPEI SHOW

French-Canadian pop singer-song writer Daniel Powter will be here.
He will perform his piano and melody-driven songs.

But the top bill is VITAS.
The fast sold out and last night’s stage presence said it all.

Next is Designers Week.
June 29 to July 4 will have the whole city involved.
But the focus will be at that landmark 6 story bookstore.

World Chinese Creative Forum will be in North China.
But the power behind it is a major Taiwan newspaper.
This line of advertising link is imaginative.
It fits perfectly for that underground saying.
That is there is policy from up.
And there is counter measure from people.
That is all ways to one destination.

And International Leisure industry Forum will be in this September in Beijing.
Vancouver with 2010 coming has to look into this development.
I will be there.

Beef noodle is more popular in Taipei than anyone can imagine.
You can enjoy it with NT $50.
But the top one is $990.
Care to try?

Finally, we love “You think you can dance” so much.
Now a Japanese version in movie is in town.
That is my goal tonight.
And there is Taipei Film Festival.
Canada’s “Away from her” is making presence here.
And it is highly regarded.

TEA POT STORM

It shows nothing outside.
But it certainly turns the in side up side down.
Taiwan Presidential election will be in next March.
And the ruling party is going all out.
The famous word is.
Any policy can get vote.
Just do it.

Now the Opposition candidate is the center of the storm.
Anything or anyone connected to him is taking apart totally and thoroughly.
To any rational and sane guy, stay away is the best policy.

Today I can see.
If you are anybody who can be any assistant to him, trouble is there already.
May it be a TV network or top banking group, you can be sure you are targeted.

And now the legal system is under President’s open attack.
Think about it that he is the best lawyer himself.
That is what absolute power can do.

It may be a teapot storm.
But it certainly is the best show in town.
And history will show it as one of the best example in corruption.

GAY DIPLOMAT

An article in Taipei by a coming out celebrate opened lot eyes.
He indirectly pointed out.
US have reasonable amount of gay diplomats.
That fits the life style and convenience.
The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy stated as the breading ground.

TAIPEI EXAMPLE

Mayor Corrigan just presented his achievement of Asia trip with Van’s Chinese press.
Many doors are opening up both ways.
Personally I would have wished he did it with me after 2002 election.
But it is better late than never.

However, since he got back in a hurry, I am sure he misses the latest in Taipei.
That is.
Taipei city is planning to put city’s 5 large parks to outside management.
Would that be great for the parks doing the same in Burnaby?
I certainly will like to entertain the idea myself.
More productivity may result.

INVESTMENT OR GAMBLE

Mediapredict.com and touchstone cooperate to test our imagination and business sense.
In a way it is to see if public perception as amateur is better than professionals.
$5,000 gets you registered.
You win some or lose all.
Choice is yours.
So is the decision.

John Naisbitt will be in Taipei to promote his new book “Mind Set” with two public speaking occasions.
Wonder if there is anyone in Taiwan like to register and bet on his book sales here.
Not me of course.
