DISGRACE VANCOUVER

Kind of expected Canucks would lose.
The power and control are not in the final full package yet.
The learning and building experience is golden.
But the riot was something shouldn’t happen.

First thought was “how come?”.
Police did warn the possibility.
That means by professional standard.
Law was prepared.

That is all talk with no action.
It is not acceptable.
Union now says.
It was under-staffed.

Playing politics in this kind major event is not acceptable.
Waiting or wishing in this case means failure by all.
And my latest observation on homeless in Burnaby did worry me.
Many rioters on TV news looked so familiar.
\
They are indeed looking and acting much younger.
And they are hungrier comparing to the past.
Cheap items in Save on Food do not interest them.
And they acted out in group with cell phones and car.

The riot now is an international headline and public joke.
Even in 35 C Taipei got full coverage.
Maybe the lover couple got more space and attention here.
Vancouver got ruined.

Police’s mention on few familiar faces made many asking me how come.
Why there was no alerting system when they were spotted?
Or as always, simply police just waited to check the films afterward.
That is what I call the sickness of glass half empty mentality.

Where was our police defensive strategy?
Didn’t we hear defensive and preventative driving?
Why it didn’t apply here for this world watching event?
Van lost the best self promoting opportunity.

We the greater Vancouver citizens deserve better.
And it shame us for not able to control a small element group.
This reflects something more serious.
That is our “not my department” mentality.

That is what we need to face and improve fast.
Riot is a done deal.
Police simply failed as professional.
It is what they will do counts the most now.

And we citizens all have to face the consequences as whole.
It is our town.
We all are a part of it.
Even I am a Burnaby residence.

We can’t play “cope out” game any more.
That will not do.
This “not my department” mentality must go.
And doing “told you so” game now is cheap.

And we have to think why many stood there “watching”.
That was the worst for world to see.
Where was the pride in our own hometown?
It was a disgrace.

We did have the best in Olympic experience.
City claimed many under our credit.
We are capable as the best.
That had justified many tax money invested. .

Did Vancouver “played” the money and didn’t learn?
Or was that another “out-sourcing” operation for us to pay up?
We have reason to be angry.
Police has no excuse what so ever.

HOT WEEKEND VANCOUVER

Van is where the action is.
Both major party leaders like Harper and Igi were here.
That shows BC seats matter.

Still, sport is top.
US political TV had to take a back seat.
City mobility started early.

Hockey is hot due to local team #1 seeding.
3-0 is the one and only goal on Sunday.
Olympic madness is back.

Then Sun Run is on.
55,000 people hit the street Sunday morning.
My son was one of them.

NBA play-off started Saturday.
Union strike next year is a possibility.
And first round match-ups are too great to miss.

Provincial NDP is electing a new leader.
Election will follow in the year.
NDP may go back in power.

MP Chinese candidates debated in Burnaby.
Not much votes will be generated.
But it was a meet the public opportunity.

Franchise Show is at Canada Place.
China investors have another option.
They are driving up local real estate market so far.

Royal Wedding will be on April 29.
And they will visit Vancouver.
That heats up local interest.

Easter Week is coming up.
People are planning vacations.
Interestingly Japan tour comes up with bargain.

THINKING LOCALLY

Great Van is having lot Chinese new comers.
Many keep the old mentality.
What happened in Shanghai high rise can be a warning.

Life style can be negative in safety consideration.
Many new comers are living in high rises here.
Old habits die hard.

And we do see them daily.
What really needs attention now is cooking.
And local high rise fire fighting is not giving us any confidence.

We have to be on our toes for now.
Talking to them will get negative response.
When feeling offended, they can get worse.

SYSTEM CANADA

Province just printed a piece.
The tenants finally get money at East Van.
And it has been years.
Some got nothing left after legal expenses.

Chinese store owner arrested the stealer is in court.
And the charge is on him.
The thief is the victim.
Whose human right is the system protecting?

Again Van airport will face name change.
This time is Terry Fox.
Many Americans still have no idea of Vancouver.
Terry Fox will be another hurdle in future name recognition.

HST is a must for government to get fresh money.
Cut spending and create income would be the right way.
But pride is in the way for old fashion honesty of competency.
Consumers really hate the new bottom line on bills.

Olympic Village is another ha-ha.
We learn it from the news that the developer behind in payment.
And then in days, they are making statement of no “problem” in payment.
Did they pay and who is lying here?

BC marijuana industry is worth $1 billion by government official.
The idea of taxing is getting worm.
Private sectors think it can be 10 times more.
But government firmly says no.

Van Sun editorial calls it time to legalize.
And BC Hydro complains growers stealing the electricity just as much.
Both actually were old story in my 2003 city council campaign.
Slow boat to China was all I can think of.

YES WE CAN

Vancouver can be as competitive.
That is to compare with rising Asia.
But we have to change mind set.

It is a regional issue in Taipei.
And it intends to sharpen up the edge to compete.
That is the airport in first line as business center.

Seeing what Taiwan is aiming at.
We can’t help but to think.
Vancouver has to be as competitive.

After all, it is the door of BC.
That goes with the full West region.
Burnaby will be fully affected.

Headline in Taipei is this.
Two major airports will be national level business center.
Vancouver can be as ambitious.

Winter Olympic is gone.
But money spent big time.
We need better continuing usage of our investment.

Business China is hot.
All see Taipei as extension of China domestic market.
And life style Taipei can be charming.

This can be window shopping for all kind of business.
Time and money saved big time.
And it is stretching the imagination of all Taiwan’s creative thinking.

Taiwan is also making good assessment of China’s middle class.
The spending power is the focus of world.
Travel free for China visitors will be the goal at end of the year.

This is why I can’t wait to go back at earliest time.
That is to see if our airport is customers friendly now.
And their mentality toward Asian face is another.

ECONOMIC VANCOUVER

BC this year sold 227 houses priced at Can $2 millions or up.
That is a 184% increase between January and March.
It is the best in Canada.

Kelowna is up 700% in top.
Vancouver sold one in $10.06 millions.
And another at $29.9 millions is in waiting.

It is obvious China luxury house buyers driving up the price.
Middle East buyers come in second.
They are real.

Chinese press covered with front page headlines.
None was mentioned in Van Sun or Province.
Community interest differs clear.

ADS meeting were attended by 120 people yesterday.
Carol James was the center of attention.
It was all about Chinese tourist.

The main concern is.
Is BC ready?
Are we looking for quality or quantity?

The tourist side seems cold.
Only 40 to 50 travel agencies will be authorized.
Minority few in control can’t cheer up the mass.

HST is in the way to cost.
Travel agents pointed out Europe relatively cheaper.
Why bother to come if no incentive.

SWEET HOME

It is a “clean” look.
There is no trace of Olympics left.
People reflect the moments still.
But life goes on.

My flight landed at 7 pm.
But the whole airport was empty.
Escalator was off.
We have to walk up with carry on.

There was fast line for citizens.
But people there were no help.
I had no choice but to go the traditional way.
And I asked and confirmed the line was for the kind like me.

This shows the form in real practice.
People stood there were in presence only.
Courtesy to the visitors were just a good thought.
Or they just didn’t feel right for the day.

Immigration was ok.
That is if comparing to recent fuss.
It was over a female traveler from Taiwan.
Sadly real story was not told.

I was real happy to see family.
Traffic was light for a Sunday night.
It was so peaceful.
My Taipei “crowded” experience felt dream like.

Airport to Metro town was clean and quiet.
Only at Red Robin, we felt the mass of crowd again.
The friendly service was the Canadian kind.
The lady deserved a good tip.

Age is catching up.
The need of sleep was real.
But bodily I had hard time to do just that.
I truly was sleepless in Burnaby.

Next morning I went for breakfast at Save on Food.
There again was no sign of any Olympic related economic boom.
I couldn’t help but to think.
Canadian economy is still mainly the natural resources.

And that was why so many China new generation were on my flight.
They are here to take over business they couldn’t buy before.
Like US, Harper is ready to sell.
That makes us better off economically if comparing to US.

In bright day light, I came to a conclusion.
Our immigration personals were not bad at all.
But they badly need international mentality.
Government has to send them aboard more often to catch up.

Canada is still in its own comfort zone.
Asia is booming with power activities.
But it is not felt at all here.
Isolation is the worst for our next generation.

Clean air and open space are our advantage.
We do have a comfortable life style.
And money is not everything.
But we still need to be competitive.

The priority of new world interest is in.
China is the focus.
India will carry 3 to 5 years later.
And Brazil and Russia burn hard too.

US are not out.
They need time.
Now they need Chinese hard cash to get the health care going.
And party politics is the big waste for nation’s passion.
Canada must go east for own well being.
I am older and may not be wiser.
But personal point of view reflects reality.
Good things are to be shared.

HAITI, A WARNING TO VANOC

Vancouver Sun’s columnist Craig is right.
Haiti is crippled by human failure in government long before the earthquake struck.
CNN clearly displayed the fact.
Law and order is the first priority before anything else.
And VANOC has to remember we are in quake zone too.

CNN compares Haiti to SF earthquake’s deaths at 60 some in the 80th.
Today’s Van Sun finally declares Haiti death at 200,000 and climbing.
This is from previous 50,000, 100,000 to 500,000.
Vancouver is in no way comparable to SF since I was there from 1963 to 1978.
I was bombarded by constant TV reminder of quake re-acting brain wash.

The joke is.
I became so good.
When back to Taiwan after married and had kid, there was quake.
My wife told everyone my getting to street from our 3rd floor apartment in seconds.
In comparison, in the beauty of “slowness of Canada”, 99% people here are not.

VANOC has to deal with terrorists too.
In the news, airport alerted to new threat.
Our Federal government is warning us of how terrorist will go to US through Canada.
US are warning citizens on terrorist threat in our Winter Olympics.
With Obama coming, logically all terrorists will zero in.

We have no clear emergency earthquake procedure to the public.
For the first 72 hours, government told us to be on our own.
That makes a calm and workable message and practice must in place right now.
There is no “if” only preparing for the worst.
Government HAS TO BE RESPONSIBLE no matter on what level.

And dealing with terrorist, total residences’ involvement is the only way.
It is not a “big brother” situation.
We the people will do the watching to protect our interest.
Neighbors know who is who will get the job done.
It is all living in Great Van and Canada.

Vancouver through the experience will be a true global city.
People will know each other all over again.
Neighborhood with care and passion will win.
That can be done in 24 hours if we “just do it”.
All visitors will see that unity first hand here.

Call me a dreamer if you want.
But I do think it is the only way to work.
Paid security force will turn off people’s passion and warmth.
They will be best at back up.
Let’s eagerly be this all communities peace watchdog.

NEW YEAR

24 wrote “dangerous people” reflecting on terrorist.
Province editorial wrote calling “MPs stop playing games”.
And Harper uses power play to “close” the Parliament.
Yes, his ear will be in peace for the moment.
But spirit of the law is damaged.
Scandal of Afghanistan is taking a break.
And VANOC is getting a raise.

Obama’s change is showing crack.
Security break down is one thing.
But two key staffs didn’t know the truth when speaking on TV was the worst.
That was as bad as Bush’s numbness when hearing of 911.
Now both parties are nothing but gang like.
Civil like and educated grace is a total ruin.
Demanding right in the name of democracy but all are short on responsibility.

Nature is fighting back.
Beijing has the worst early snow.
Earthquakes were in different areas.
Past logic or common sense is no longer valid.
Earth is playing hard ball with us.
Taking things for granted will be a major mistake.
We all need to learn to fear and to respect all over again.

Asia is showing promises.
Smart ones are fast catching on.
BMO looks China and India for expansion.
CNN reported US banking people heading Shanghai.
That tells where the action or opportunity is.
The magic word is China domestic market.
Shanghai EXPO will be an official start.

Sadly here in Vancouver, we hear no news of Canada EXPO presence.
It is like the special interest is not in final settlement.
And there is only cash quells concern for GM Place.
Richmond Oval is already in deficit.
Citizen can not help but feel being had.
Those in the name of experienced and professional are really learning on the job.
And we are paying them to do that.

24’s Money section advised.
Forget formulas, get smart to manage income.
Focus on reducing debt.
It is sound advice.
But we are not seeing the practice on VANOC operation.
We tax payers ought to demand.
Show us transparency and accountability now.

China now is the largest car market.
Annual 12 million new car sales said it all.
And India is king in low cost small car market.
There is ASEAN plus One.
China’s currency will be king in that 1/3 of world population market.
It is a 1.7 billion consumers’ market.
The worth is targeted at US $6 trillion dollars.
